NORTH KENSINGTON CITY CHALLENGE

Barley Shotts business ParkMANAGEMENT

North Kensington City Challenge (NKCC) was a Government funded 5 year regeneration programme with an overall value of £150m, of which £37.5m was DoE grant. I was Chief Executive from May 94 until Jan '98. It was highly rated by the DETR and frequently cited in official 'good practice' guides.

PROGRAMME AND PROJECTS

Over 200 projects were developed and funded in accordance with strategies for economic development, access to employment , housing and combating crime . Also environmental improvements and projects in the fields of arts, health, community development and sport. A key feature was an innovative programme to get local people into work in the media and cultural industries.

NKCC was involved in funding and delivering a range of buildings and the programme thrived on many successful bids for Lottery, SRB and European funding for new buildings including:

  • Purpose Built Artists Studios
  • Film and Recording studios for training purposes
  • Canoeing Centre for the Disabled
  • Three Arts & Activity Centres for young people
  • New H.Q for Action Disability
  • New H.Q for Community Transport
  • Migrant and Refugee Centre
  • Muslim Cultural Heritage Centre
  • A Science and Technology Centre for Primary Schools
  • Sports facilities
  • Business Support centre
  • New 'high tech' business space
  • Large scale housing programme
  • Renewal of 3 parks.
